South Foreland Lighthouse in Kent

The Victorian South Foreland lighthouse was originally built to warn mariners of shifting sands and guide them through the Strait of Dover. It’s one of the most distinctive features of this part of the White Cliffs of Dover.

From the top you get a great view of the English Channel and can see the French coast on a clear day.

Visits to the lighthouse are by guided tour only. Tours last 30 minutes, last tour leaves at 5pm. No booking is necessary. See what it was like to work here and what a lighthouse keeper did while on duty and see the Victorian clockwork mechanism that made the lighthouse flash.

Visit Mrs Knott’s Tea-room, in the former lighthouse keeper’s cottage, for afternoon tea.

Important info:

It’s not possible to access the lighthouse by car. Parking is available at the White Cliffs of Dover Visitor Centre, then it’s a lovely 2-mile walk along the cliffs following the way-marked trail.
